Advantages of AAFM Membership

AAFM hosts one major conference annually in the fall and a spring symposium or workshop.  The conferences provide members an opportunity to present and discuss technical papers on various aspects of floodplain management as well as attend presentations by state and federal officials concerning their programs. The conferences also provide an opportunity for members to exchange information with their counterparts, learn about new products and services from vendor displays, and network with other floodplain management professionals.

AAFM is a chapter of the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) which has established a national program for professional certification of floodplain managers.  The program recognizes continuing education and professional development that enhance the knowledge and performance of local, state, federal, and private-sector floodplain managers.  Currently, as of August 2020, there are 142 Certified Floodplain Managers (CFMs) in Alabama that can receive continuing education credits at AAFM's workshops, symposiums and conferences in order to meet annual education credit requirements.  For more information on certification, please visit ASFPM's Certification Program.

The role of the nation's floodplain managers is expanding due to increases in disaster losses, the emphasis on mitigation to alleviate the cycle of damage-rebuild-damage, and a recognized need for professionals to adequately address these issues.  The CFM certification program is laying the foundation for ensuring that highly qualified individuals are available to meet the challenge of breaking the damage cycle and stopping its negative drain on Alabama's human, financial, and natural resources. See the current list of CFMs in Alabama by clicking on this link: List of CFM's in Alabama.

Members will receive our newsletter, training eligible for CFM credits, discounts to our annual conference and workshops, voting privileges for officers and directors, and the opportunity to participate in our committees.  In the future we hope to expand the member features on our website to include open forums, current news articles, and more details for upcoming events related to floodplain management.  Probably the best benefits of becoming a member of AAFM are the opportunities to interact with fellow professionals in your field, share experiences, provide support, and promote goodwill through flood risk reduction activities across the state.

We are developing our association to help shape the future of floodplain management and flood risk reduction in Alabama.  We would be pleased if you join our Association.  Please click on the link below to join.
